Hey you 👋

In the last edition, I shared my 2025 wrap, which should be shared in the initial days of the new year. But I was swamped with work, so I thought to pause while writing down everything that reflects my whole year's progress.

After all, even a small win matters when you’re building yourself. I hardly took time to pat myself on a few small and a few big wins, so I decided to put everything in my newsletter → where I’m also documenting my journey.

So, I mentioned getting two bylines in my last edition. I spoke with a few writers and found many are struggling (some of them were not even aware of how this works) with a byline or entering SaaS.

This gave me an idea to cover this topic in my edition, which might help others. Now, if you’re any of the above, read this newsletter till the end— because I’m going to share the complete process for writing a guest post, aka a byline on any site of your niche.

Why is Byline important?

First and foremost, know that a byline is the way to build your portfolio, which shows your writing skills and style, and reflects that you can write content in the respective niche.

And having bylines on reputed platforms (of your niche) is a big bonus to land high-paying gigs and clients. No matter which space you want to establish yourself in, a byline is the only way to reduce the time and enter quickly.

So, if you want freelance or even full-time work, you should have a solid portfolio or bylines (bonus) showing that you can write such content.

What are Guest Posts: Those who don't know, guest posts are the simple way of getting byline on any website to build a portfolio. It shows your work, style and how you approach content. They act as samples to share with your clients. Because without samples, it's too hard to land any opprtunity at a reputed place considering the content writing market.

How To Get A Byline? And How I Got Mine?

See, most websites have a “Write for us” section for writers who want to contribute or submit a guest post for the byline or portfolio. It is profitable for both the writer and the website. Since you get a byline to show your client, and they get an unpaid piece written for them to boost their visibility and traction.

Let’s understand the process with my example.

Last year, when it was about to end, I decided to enter the SaaS space because I wanted to work on SaaS projects and some of my dream clients. But it was not possible without relevant samples to show my work and skills.

I had a few samples written as part of my assignment, but considering the type of SaaS sample that really makes the cut, it was not a good match, though! So I decided to reach out to relevant websites and check if they accept guest posts. Luckily, some of my fellow connections took this same approach, so I had a list of a few names.

Reach out to These Websites!

When I had names, I decided to go with the first one— Mobile Text Alert. Fortunately, by the time I wanted this, he shared a similar post inviting writers for a guest post collaboration, and I quickly reached out.

I had no great samples during that time, just a few ghostwritten clips and some of my personal blogs, but I decided to share whatever I had while showing that I really want to write for them, even if my clips don’t match what they post. I reached out via LinkedIn and shared samples via mail.

And guess what, he added me to the author list for reaching out later.

Fast forward, he reached out next month, and by the end of 2025, I got my glowing First SaaS Byline. I used the same approach for my next byline.

And now I have four bylines across three different platforms. It was once like a dream that came true last year.

FYI, I haven’t stopped yet because the more bylines you have on different sites, the more diverse content you can share with your clients. So I decided to build bylines while pitching them to relevant clients.

How Bylines Help in Portfolio and Getting Work?

Bylines are a solid way to build a portfolio, no matter which niche you’re interested in! Because clients ask for samples to see whether you can write for them, and if yes, what type of content you have written before?

So, how are you going to show your skills?

By saying that:

  • “I’m a great writer.”

  • “I have written for X years in Y industry and write for you too.”

  • “I have not worked in this space, but can write for you.”

  • Or “ I don’t use AI to write, so I’m the most suitable for this opportunity.”

If you had any of these in your mind, cut them out— A big no ❌

Now everyone wants to see work, results, or numbers to check whether you’re a good fit.

Paid trial is an option, but it only works when you make the cut if you have any relevant samples, or sometimes when luck works in your favor if you have no clips to share.

Because the market is too crowded, every writer is trying hard; once you lose a tick of being the right fit, you’ll probably lose the opportunity.

Especially if you’re in the SaaS space or pitching international/high-paying clients.

Ohh, I forgot to share— My guest post for MTA ranked no.1 within a few hours of going live! Isn’t that amazing? Well, it was a big win for me and now too.

Also, I have decided to build my portfolio in another space I’m interested in writing with this same approach.

I have also started pitching clients and sharing my samples, so I expect to land a few gigs soon. The goal for this year is to establish myself as a SaaS writer and work with amazing clients to learn more and gain experience.
